In 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated 40 miles above Texas just minutes before it was scheduled to land. It killed a 7-member crew.

On this date in 1763, the Treaty of Paris was signed, ending the French and Indian War in North America. This conflict ranged from North America to India.


February 11, 1847 Thomas Edison's Birthday
Thomas Edison was an American inventor and genius! He holds more than 1,200 patents, including patents for the electric lamp and phonograph! He said "Genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration."


February 11, 1990 Nelson Mandela's Prison Release
After serving 27.5 years (of a life sentence for conspiracy to overthrow the government of South Africa), Nelson Mandela (age 71) was released from prison.


February 12, 1809 Abraham Lincoln's Birthday
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the U.S., and the first to be assassinated. During his presidency, the Civil War raged. He is especially remembered for his speech, The Emancipation Proclamation.


February 14 Valentines Day
Valentine's Day is one of the most widely observed "unofficial" holidays, and is a day set aside to send affectionate messages to loved ones. It has its roots in two saints of that name, and has a loose relationship to the ancient pagan observation of Lupercalia.


February 15, 1564 Galileo's Birthday
Galileo was a physicist and astronmer whohelped dispel medieval myths of the concepts of the world. He proved that all object descend at the same speed, regardless of size.


February 18, 1930 Planet Pluto Discovered
Pluto, the ninth planet from the sun, ws discovered on this day by astronomer Clyde Tombaugh. It was given the name of the Roman god of the underworld!


February 19, 1473 Nicolaus Copernicus' Birthday
Nicolaus Coperincus was a Polish astronmer and priest who came up with the theory that the sun, instead of the earth, was at the center of our planetary system.


February 19, 1942 Anniversary of Japanese Internment
Sadly, 110,000 Japanese Americans living mainly on the West Coast were placed in concentration camps - based on a presidential proclamation by President Roosevelt. This was supposed to be a preventative World War II effort. Japanese-Americans lost over $400 million in property, and were interned for nearly 3 years.


February 20, 1902 Ansel Adams' Birthday
Ansel Adams was known for his black and white photographs of Yosemite National Park, and other beautiful photographs throughout his career as a photographer.


February 20, 2006 President's Day
President's Day observes both the birthdays of George Washington (2/22) and Abraham Lincoln (2/12). It has also become a holiday to honor all former presidents of the U.S.

George Washington was the first president of the US.


February 24, 1786 Carl Wilhelm Grimm's Birthday
Carl Grimm, along with his brother, are most remembered for the classic Fairy Tales that they wrote together. He was German in origin.


February 25, 1841 Auguste Pierre Renoir's Birthday
Renoir is a famous painter, and was part of the Impressionist movement in France. His paintings are known for their use of light, their beauty, and their sense of joy.


February 27, 1807 Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Birthday
Longfellow was an American poet and writer, and is best known for his narrative poems, such as Paul Revere's Ride, The Song of Hiawatha, and others.


February 28, 2006 Mardi Gras
Marti Gras is celebrated throughout the country, but especially in New Orleans, LA. It is celebrated as the last feast before Lent, and literally translates as "Fat Tuesday".
