All entries will be posted and archived online - see your creations published, and at the end of the summer, receive an E-Book that includes your work!

Create a Society Challenge

What type of culture can you imagine? Each week, complete a new aspect of the design of your very own culture! If you choose to submit all 12 projects, we will post it online, and at the end of the summer, HLN will award certificates and prizes to the most creative and well-developed culture! The ability to transmit artwork electronically is recommended for this project.

The projects each week are as follows:

Week 01:
What, Where and When?!

Making decisions about your culture...

 

Week 02:
Geography through Art

Create a drawing or painting of your culture's physical environment...

 

Week 03:
Architecture?

Through art and writing, describe the buildings and homes of the people of your culture...

 

Week 04:
Politics, Economy, Currency

Is your culture a democracy? What does the money look like?

 

Week 05:
Education & Language

What are schools like in your culture? What type of language do they speak?

 

Week 06:
Foods

This week, have fun describing - and perhaps preparing - some foods for your culture!
Week 07:
Clothing

How do the people in your society dress? Become a clothing designer!

 

Week 08:
Religion and Rituals

What religion is the people of your culture? What types of rituals do they practice?

 

Week 09:
Holidays & Celebrations

Does your culture celebrate an independance day? Labor day? Other holidays? You decide!

 

Week 10:
Folklore

This week, create your own folklore tale for your culture...

 

Week 11:
Create a Hero!

Every culture needs a hero! This week, create your own hero story, and draw a pciture of their heroic act!

 

Week 12:
Final Presentation

This week, create your final masterpiece! Create an image that represents as many aspects of the culture as possible!

 

Art Challenge

Would you like to create a new work of art each week this summer? Try our Art Challenge! Each week, you will be provided with a topic to draw, paint, sculpt or illustrate. If ten submissions are received, we will award a weekly winner, and at the end of the summer, we will award certificates and prizes for the best works of art submitted!

The projects each week are as follows:

 

Week 01: Let's Warm Up! Copy a Master
Who is your favorite artist in history? This week, create your own version of your favorite painting!
Week 02: Portraits
Portraits are drawings, paintings, or sculptures of people - this week, create a portrait of yourself or someone you love!
Week 03: Landscapes
What does your neighborhood or favorite vacation spot look like? Landscapes can be full of nature or full of city life - you choose!
Week 04: Still Lifes
"Still Lifes" are drawings or paintings of objects - flowers, fruits, toys, or....??? You decide!
Week 05: Abstract Art
Abstract Art is artwork that is not of any recognizable object - it is made up of colors and shapes that are pleasing or artistic to your eye. This week, give Abstract Art a try!
Week 06: Wildlife Illustration
What in nature interests you? Plants? Insects? Animals? This week, choose one object from nature, and create a scientific illustration!
Week 07: Create a Book Cover!
This week, you become an illustrator and create a cover for your favorite book!
Week 08: Tromp L'Oeil
Tromp L'Oeil is a French word that means "deceive the eye"! This week, you will learn about and create a Tromp L'Oeil piece of art!
Week 09: Clay Creations
This week, you will try your hand at sculpture! You'll learn about clay, and the types of artwork you can create with it!
Week 10: Perspective
Perspective is the cornerstone of realistic artwork - what is it, and how can you create a piece of artwork that includes perspective? Join us this week and find out!
Week 11: Collage
Dig through magazines and old pictures... rummage through your junk drawers... use your own words, pictures, fabrics... and more!
Week 12: Fantasy Art
Do you imagine a creature that does not exist, or what life is like on another planet? This week, create your own fantasy artwork to match your wildest imagination!

 

Poetry Challenge

Do you love poetry? Each week, learn about a new type of poem, then try your hand at writing your own! Each week, your entries will be entered into our Poetry Challenge. If ten submissions are received, we will award a weekly winner, and at the end of the summer, we will award certificates and prizes for the best poetry submitted!

The projects each week are as follows:

 

Week 01: Haiku Poem Challenge
This week, learn what a Haiku poem is, and create your own!
Week 02: Limerick Poem Challenge
Learn about this type of short, funny poem and write your own.
Week 03: Sonnet Challenge
Pretend you are like Shakespeare, learn about sonnets, and write your own love poem.
Week 04: Couplet and Quatrain Challenge
Couplets and quatrains are types of rhyming poems - learn how to create one, then write your own on a theme of your choice!
Week 05: Cinquain Poem Challenge
Cinquain poems are short, usually unrhymed, with 22 syllables... Learn more about them, then try your own!
Week 06: Free Verse Challenge
Do you have your own ideas about what a poem should be? Then you might be a free verse poet!
Week 07: Diamante Challenge
Diamante means "diamond" in French - and is created in a diamond shape with nouns, adjectives and verbs. Learn more!
Week 08: Quinzaine Challenge
The term "quinzaine" comes from the French word quinze, which means "15". It has 15 syllables and 3 lines that do not rhyme. Learn more!
Week 09: Poetry Theme: Summertime
Now that you have learned all about different poetry types, which ones are your favorite?
Week 10: Poetry Theme: My Family
This week, you will focus on a poem about your family, or someone in your family.
Week 11: Poetry Theme: Nature
Nature poems are always a favorite - read some famous poems about nature, then write your own!
Week 12: Poetry Theme: Open
In our final week of summer, submit your favorite poem, or write one more!

 

Fiction Writing

Take a look at the photos below... can you see a story in each picture?! Each week, you will be provided with one of these pictures along with some writing ideas... then it is up to YOU to come up with a creative story to go with the picture! Each week, your entries will be entered into our Fiction Writing Challenge. If ten submissions are received, we will award a weekly winner, and at the end of the summer, we will award certificates and prizes for the best fiction submitted!
